In business for 50 years, Herring knows septic!

Herring Sanitation started in business July 3, 1973. We are a family run business with a family feel that is soon felt by all employees. We offer full septic services to all of Dutchess County, some of Ulster, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange and some other surrounding counties. We have grown to include Water Jetting, Snaking Services, Video Camera service, Septic Inspections, and some minor Plumbing. We offer Portable Toilets and Tank Rentals as well as Service. Our goal is to offer a service that is competent and fairly priced. We strive to leave our customers having all their needs met. What is important to us is that the customer feels safe and taken care of enough to recommend us to their friends and family.

The Original Herring Pump Truck

How does a broke and struggling 22 year old become one of the most respected local business owners in the Hudson Valley?


Every story starts somewhere. This story begins with Jimmy Herring and an old truck he purchased for $1500 in 1973. Jimmy didn’t have the money for the truck so the seller let him make payments. He then got as many strong hands together as he could and dragged a tank out of the woods. He paid $50 for the tank and rigged it to the truck - building his first septic pumping vehicle.


This photo shows Jimmy with his first truck in 1973. Through hard work, honesty and good service, Herring Sanitation has become one of the largest septic companies in the Tri-State area with 13 trucks and 25 employees.


Herring Sanitation is truly a family company. Sharon runs the office, Jason manages the day to day, Amy runs the financials and portable toilets and many of the Herring children and grandchildren work for the company in varying capacities.


As Jimmy says, if you want a successful business, find something where you can “feed ‘em or clean up after ‘em.”

Family Owned and Family Run, Since Day One

Thanks to our loyal customers and all the work that has come our way throughout the years, Herring has been able to grow as a family and raise our children here. With 8 children and 16 grandchildren, many in the Hudson Valley have gotten to know the Herring family personally.


It is not easy to run a business, employ workers, raise a family and ensure you have a good reputation on top of all of that. We're so proud of all we have been able to contribute to our customers through hard work and perseverance.


Through the Pandemic and the challenges that have followed, we are so glad we have been able to stay the course, stay in business and stay true to our company values - to provide good work to our customers and a good work environment for our workers.
